Janetra Carter Smith of Atlanta GA, passed away Friday September 29th, 2023. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at the Liberty Baptist Church Atlanta 395 Chamberlain Street SE Atlanta GA, Rev. Dr. Zeddie D. Scott, Pastor, officiating, Rev. Dr. Darryl J. Tookes, Eulogist; Interment, Lincoln Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Liberty Baptist Church on Friday from 1 PM - 5 PM.
She was born in Knoxville Tennessee in December, 1940, to parents, Muford & Beatrice Carter. She was a graduate of Austin High School.
Janetra enjoyed a full life. As a young adult she relocated to Georgia and has called it home for over 50 years. She worked with Kmart, as a department Manager, the Presbyterian Church US, and was an employee of Fulton County. She retired from Fulton County in 2004. In Georgia, she met and married the love of her life Bob Smith, a Deacon of Liberty Baptist Church. She also met her best friend Jean Neal, a friendship that spanned over 40 years. Janetra actively shared the word of God and was an advocate of nonviolent social change, participating in several “sit-ins” throughout Atlanta during the Civil Rights Movement.
She was a faithful Christian servant. As a member of Liberty Baptist Church on Chamberlain street in Atlanta. Janetra served as a class Governor. She was a member of the December Club, an Assistant Church Treasurer, Trustee, Missionary, Deaconess, and a Living Legend. She loved to encourage the young people, especially those from single parent homes.
Janetra was preceded in death by her parents, Muford and Beatrice Carter, her husband Robert A. Smith of 20 years, her brothers, Lincoln Carter, Nathan E Carter, and Emmanuel Carter. She is survived by her sister Omega Sumpter Lamont, her brother Muford Leonard Carter, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She enjoyed the arts, especially theater, and museums, often taking her friends and family with her on her adventures. Janetra traveled extensively throughout her life; riding camels in Egypt, skydiving, and ringing in the New Year in New York City’s Times Square. She will be dearly missed.
