Rev. Porter G. Denson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at the age of 71.
Born on June 17, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Arthur and Louise Denson, Porter was one of seven children and was named after his beloved uncle, the late Porter Denson Sr. From an early age, he exemplified the values of faith, service, and leadership that would come to define his life’s journey.
A passionate advocate for justice and community empowerment, Rev. Denson served honorably in the Army National Guard and became a leading voice in civic engagement. He proudly worked on Shirley Chisholm’s presidential campaign, maintaining a close relationship with her as her godson. His commitment to public service extended to collaborations with influential leaders such as Senator Alfonse D’Amato, Mayor Ed Koch, and President Jimmy Carter.
As a civil rights activist, Rev. Denson stood shoulder to shoulder with his childhood friend Rev. Al Sharpton, working on the Tawana Brawley case and many other critical causes. His impact in Brooklyn was profound serving as Director of Together We Stand, owning a full block of stores on Broadway, and helping young people succeed as a recruiter for the Midtown School of Business.
A man of many talents and passions, Rev. Denson founded Denson Luxury Transportation, a limousine and luxury car service that brought elegance to life’s special occasions. His charisma, commitment to excellence, and vibrant personality made him a beloved figure in both his professional and personal circles.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Rena Denson, with whom he shared a rich life filled with faith, love, and partnership. Together, they were blessed with a loving family:
Sons: Martin (Jaylisa) of Atlanta, GA; and Darrion of Atlanta, GA
Daughters:, SC; Vertez of Orlando, FL; Velma (John) of Port Washington, MD (with former wife Wendy Burks); Shereenia of Myrtle Beach and Catrina of Brooklyn, NY.
Rev. Denson was preceded in death by his beloved son, Porter Jr., and four siblings: James, Louis, Stella, and John. Despite these profound losses, he remained a source of strength, resilience, and guidance for all who knew him.
He also leaves to cherish his memory, siblings: Perry and Velma of Charlotte, NC; Nieces & Nephews; Grandchildren, who brought him immense joy; Lifelong friend and business partner of 66 years, Patricia McNeil, who stood faithfully by his side through all of life’s seasons.
Rev. Denson’s life was a testimony of love for God, commitment to justice, and unwavering service to others. His voice, leadership, and compassionate spirit touched countless lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Though we deeply mourn his passing, we celebrate a life beautifully lived—a life that left the world more just, more hopeful, and filled with love.
